AI and Robotics at the Confluence of STEM and ELSE Disciplines
CROSSROADS Doctorate Summer School
AI and Robotics at the Confluence of STEM and ELSE Disciplines
July 14th-18th, 2025
Polytechnic School of Engineering and Architecture
Via Montallegro 1, Genova, Italy
Motivations and Objectives
AI and Robotics are advancing rapidly in engineering and scientific fields, and are also strongly impacting non-technical domains. They are creating new markets and simultaneously raising fundamental new legal, social, and ethical questions.
The interplay of these emerging issues will certainly shape the future of AI and Robotics applications.
A comprehensive understanding of the broader implications of these technologies will lead to new scientific questions, driving innovation that aligns with fundamental human rights and fosters social acceptance.
This dynamic interplay between technological progress and societal concerns will be the key to build markets and systems that are both responsible and sustainable.
The goal of the school is to bring together doctorate students, scientists, and professionals from the STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and ELSE (economics, legal, social, ethical) disciplines to discuss about the contemporary key themes of the research in AI and Robotics from different perspectives to plot a vision of the future research and development challenges and opportunities in the key domains of Citizens’ Society, Healthcare, Environment, and Manufacturing.

Target
The school is open to doctorate students of STEM and ELSE disciplines, but also to scientists, and practitioners interested to probe further the relevant aspects of the new AI and Robotics technologies and their implications with a transdisciplinary approach, including:
- safety of robots and autonomous systems
- digital health
- personalized medicine
- AI legislation
- AI and robotics markets
- trustworthy and explainable AI
- ethics and social issues
- bioinspired robotics and AI
Program and activities
CROSSROADS features a structured approach that includes lectures, interactive workgroup sessions, and student-led presentations, all designed to deeply involve participants in the subjects covered by the school.
